Game download time calculator

Enter the download size and your internet speed to see how long a game, update or patch will take.

Most broadband plans are sold in Mbps (megabits). Steam and console download screens usually show MB/s (megabytes), which is 8 times larger.

How this is worked out

We turn the size into megabits (1 GB is 8,000 megabits), divide by your speed, and assume you get about 85% of the speed you pay for.

Not sure of your speed? Run a free test on fast.com or speedtest.net and use the download number.

The size on a store page is the download. The game can take more space once it is installed.

–
at about 85% of your plan speed, which is typical in real use
At this speedTime

Common questions

Why is my download slower than my internet plan?

Plans advertise a maximum.

Wi-Fi distance, other devices on the network and the game server’s own speed usually bring real speed down to 60 to 90 percent of that number.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second and MB/s is megabytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide Mbps by 8.

A 100 Mbps plan downloads at about 12.5 MB/s at best.

Will a wired connection make it faster?

Usually yes. An Ethernet cable gives a faster and steadier connection than Wi-Fi, especially when the console is far from the router or behind walls.

Why does my console keep “copying” after the download finishes?

Consoles unpack and install the files after downloading them. On big games and updates this can add several minutes on top of the download time.

How many games fit on my console?

Uses the real usable space on each console, not the number on the box.

How this is worked out

Free space is your usable space minus what is already used. We divide that by the typical game size and round down.

To see your real numbers, open Settings, then Storage on PS5, or Settings, System, Storage devices on Xbox.

–

Each square is one more game of that size. Grey squares are space you have already used.

Common questions

Why is the usable space smaller than what the box says?

The system software and reserved space take a share of the drive.

Storage is also sold in decimal units, while consoles often report it differently, which shrinks the number further.

Can I add more storage to a PS5?

Yes. The PS5 has a slot for an M.2 NVMe SSD. Check Sony’s listed requirements for speed and size before buying one.

A USB drive can store PS5 games but cannot play them.

Can I add more storage to an Xbox Series X or S?

Yes, with an official Storage Expansion Card, which plays Series X|S games directly.

A USB drive can play older Xbox One games, but newer games must run from internal storage or the expansion card.

How much data does gaming use?

See how much data online play and cloud gaming use, and how long your daily pack will last.

Downloading the game and its updates is separate and usually far bigger than playing it.

How this is worked out

Online games mostly send small updates about where players are, so they use little data.

Cloud gaming streams video to you, so we take the stream rate and work out an hour of it:

Cloud streamAbout (Mbps)
720p10
1080p20
1440p30
4K40

Each service sets its own quality, so treat these as typical figures.

–
per hour of play
–per day
–per 30 days
–hours your daily pack lasts

Common questions

Does online gaming use a lot of data?

Usually not. Most online games use well under 200 MB an hour. The big data costs are downloading the game, patches and updates.

Is mobile data good enough for online gaming?

For most multiplayer games, yes, if the signal is steady. Delay (ping) matters more than speed.

Cloud gaming needs a strong, stable signal and uses far more data.

How can I save data while gaming?

Turn off automatic updates on mobile data, download big patches on Wi-Fi, and lower the streaming quality when cloud gaming.

What does gaming cost in electricity?

Pick your setup, enter the rate from your bill, and see the cost per hour, month and year.

Wattages are typical figures while playing a demanding game. Menus and lighter games draw less.

How this is worked out

Cost per hour is watts divided by 1,000, times your rate per unit. A 400 W PC with a 30 W monitor uses 0.43 units an hour.

In many countries the rate depends on your region, your supplier and how many units you use in a month, so take it from your latest bill.

For an exact reading of your own setup, a plug-in power meter shows the real draw.

–
per month at your daily hours
–per hour
–per year
–units (kWh) a month
Want the running cost of your fridge, AC or geyser too?See appliance costs on PlugFacts

Common questions

Does a PS5 use electricity in rest mode?

Yes, a small amount. Rest mode keeps downloads and controller charging running. Turning off those options lowers the standby draw.

Does a gaming PC cost more to run than a console?

Usually. A mid-range gaming PC draws about twice as much as a PS5 while playing, and a high-end PC can draw three times as much.

How can I cut the cost?

Cap the frame rate in games that do not need it, switch the console fully off overnight, and use power-saving modes on PCs and TVs.

Where is it cheapest?

Pick a device and your country. We find the cheapest country to buy it in and what it costs once you bring it home, with customs duty and tax.

Biggest savings

    Common questions

How do you work out the cheapest country?

We take the official price in every country we track, convert it to your currency and add the customs duty and tax your country charges, either in your luggage or by courier.

The country with the lowest total wins.

Why is the cheapest country not always recommended?

Some cheaper models only work in one language or with one country’s accounts, such as the Japan-only Switch 2.

We skip those and show the next best country, with a note explaining why.

Does the total include shipping and card fees?

No. Luggage totals assume the device is your only new item.

Courier totals are before shipping, and card fees for paying in another currency are not included.

Will the warranty work at home?

Usually not. Manufacturers often repair devices under warranty only in the country where they were bought, so check before you buy abroad.

    Console import cost calculator

Buying a console, handheld or VR headset in another country?

See the customs duty and tax you pay when it arrives home, in your luggage or by courier.

Rules and rates used for your country
    How this is worked out

In your luggage, most countries give each traveller a duty-free allowance for new goods.

Some charge duty and tax only on the amount over it, others charge on the full value as soon as you go over.

The calculator follows your country’s rule.

By courier or post, duty is charged on the price plus shipping, and VAT or GST is then charged on the total.

Every rate can be changed if your situation is different.

    –
    estimated landed cost at home

Warranty is usually only honoured in the country of purchase. Card fees for foreign purchases are not included.

US and Canadian prices are before their local sales tax.

    Common questions

Do I pay tax on the whole price or just the part over my allowance?

    It depends on the country.

CountriesDuty and tax are charged on
India, the US, Canada, the UAE and SingaporeOnly the amount over the allowance
The UK, the EU and AustraliaThe full value of an item once it takes you over the limit

The second group charges the full value because a single item cannot be split.

Can my family combine their allowances for one console?

In most countries, no: each person’s allowance covers only their own goods.

The US is an exception, where family members travelling together can file a joint declaration and combine their exemptions.

Is shipping a console cheaper than carrying it?

Sometimes. Courier imports skip the traveller rules and are charged at the normal import rates, which can be lower or higher depending on the country.

Compare both options in the calculator.

What if I do not declare it?

Walking through the “nothing to declare” channel with goods over your allowance counts as not declaring them.

Customs can seize the goods and charge a penalty on top of the duty.

The PS5 Digital Edition needs the separate disc drive to play discs, and the Xbox Series S has no disc drive.

    Common questions

Can I play a game disc from another country on my PS5?

Yes. PS5 games are not region-locked, so discs from any country play on any PS5.

Check the languages on the box, since some Japanese editions do not include English.

Why will my console play foreign games but not foreign movies?

Games and movies follow different rules. Movie Blu-rays and DVDs carry region codes set by the disc formats.

For example, the USA uses Blu-ray region A and Europe uses region B, so a European movie disc will not play on a US console.

Is the Japanese Switch 2 region locked?

The cheaper Japan-only, Japanese-language Switch 2 is limited to Japanese and Japanese Nintendo Accounts.

The international Switch 2 sold in Japan is not.

    More countries are coming.

    Common questions

Why do US and Canadian prices look lower?

In the US and Canada, prices are shown before tax, and sales tax is added at the till.

    CountrySales tax added (%)
    United States0 to about 10
    Canada5 to 15

The rate depends on where you live. Most other countries include VAT or GST in the price on the shelf.

What does “before tax” mean here?

It is the shelf price with the local VAT or GST taken out.

Comparing before-tax prices shows what the device really costs in each market, but a traveller usually pays the full shelf price unless the country offers a tourist tax refund.

Why did every console get more expensive in 2026?

Memory and storage chips became much more expensive in 2026.

Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Valve and Meta all raised their prices between April and September 2026, and named component costs as the reason.

Why is a device only sold as an import in some countries?

Not every device is launched everywhere.

Where a maker does not sell officially, shops bring in units from abroad, usually at a higher price and without a local warranty.

For example, the Switch 2, Steam Deck and Meta Quest are only available as imports in India. Pick your country above to see the status of each device.

Why is a device missing for my country?

We only list prices we can confirm from the maker or a reliable report.

Game Pass vs PS Plus: is it worth it?

See what each plan costs over a year and compare it with buying the games yourself.

    How this is worked out

Game Pass plans are billed monthly, so we multiply by the months you subscribe.

PS Plus is shown at the 12-month price, which is the cheapest way to pay.

The comparison uses the cheapest plan with a game catalogue on your platform, because the basic tiers are mainly for online play.

Catalogues change every month, so check that the games you want are included.

    PlanPricePer year

PS Plus prices from the PlayStation Store and Game Pass prices from the Microsoft Store in each country, checked 19 October 2026.

Plans we could not confirm for a country are left out.

    Common questions

Which Game Pass plan gets new games on day one?

Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox, and PC Game Pass on PC, get many new games on day one.

Since April 2026, new Call of Duty games arrive on Game Pass about a year after launch instead.

Do I need PS Plus to play online?

For most paid games on PS5, yes, and any tier works. Free-to-play games such as Fortnite do not need it.

Can I use a subscription from another country?

Subscriptions are tied to your account’s region. Codes from another region usually will not redeem, and changing region can break existing purchases.

Sending a console or game abroad

Shipping a console, handheld or game to a friend, family member or buyer in another country?

See what they will pay when it arrives, and what to check first.

      How this is worked out

The value is converted into the receiver’s currency.

Customs at the destination charges its parcel duty on the value plus shipping, then VAT, GST or sales tax on the total, using the same rules as our import calculator.

Gifts are usually taxed like purchases once they are above a small limit, so declare the true value.

      Before you ship

      • Declare the real value. Writing a low value or “gift” to avoid duty can lead to fines, delays or the parcel being seized.
      • Batteries. Consoles, controllers and handhelds with built-in batteries can usually be shipped, but loose spare batteries and power banks are restricted. Check your courier’s rules.
      • Duties paid or unpaid. If the receiver pays on delivery, the courier may add a handling fee on top of the duty.
      • Will it work there? Check the power rating, and use our region checker for games, movies and accounts.
      • Warranty. Most makers only repair consoles in the country where they were bought.
      • Packing and insurance. Use the original box if you have it, and insure the parcel for its full value.

      Common questions

Who pays customs duty when I send a parcel abroad?

The receiver, unless you choose a “duties paid” service where you pay in advance. Either way, the amount is set by the destination country.

Is a gift free of duty?

Only below a small limit that varies by country, and often only between private people. A new console is almost always above it.

Can I send a used console abroad?

Yes. Declare what it is worth now, not what you paid. Customs may ask for proof, such as a listing or receipt.
