Best SSD for PS5 in India: what to buy and how to fit it
Checked 24 October 2026
Buy an M.2 NVMe SSD, PCIe Gen4, 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink, from 250 GB up to 8 TB.
Those are Sony’s own rules for the PS5 expansion slot, and they apply to every PS5, including the Slim, Digital Edition and Pro. This guide is written for buyers in India, but the rules are the same everywhere.
What the PS5 needs
Sony’s M.2 SSD support page lists these requirements, checked 24 October 2026.
| Requirement | Sony’s rule |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M) |
| Storage space | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Read speed | 5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster is recommended |
| Form factor | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 |
| Socket | Socket 3 (Key M) |
| Cooling | Required, such as a heatsink or a heat transfer sheet |
| Size with cooling | Up to 25 mm wide; 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm long; up to 11.25 mm thick (8.0 mm above the board, 2.45 mm below) |
Single-sided and double-sided drives both work. M.2 SATA drives do not.
How much space you need
Work it out from the games you play: our storage calculator shows how many fit on each PS5 and on a new drive.
- GTA 6: Rockstar has not announced the file size yet. The store listing will show it before release on 19 November 2026.
- Your console: the usable space is smaller than the number on the box, because the system takes a share.
- Plan ahead: big games also grow with updates, so leave some room.

What to look for when buying
Check these five things on the listing before you pay; the brand matters less than the specifications.
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| PCIe Gen4 NVMe | “PCIe 4.0” or “Gen4” and “NVMe” in the title; not SATA, not Gen3 |
| Read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster, as Sony recommends |
| Cooling | A built-in heatsink, or add a PS5 heatsink that keeps the drive within Sony’s size limits |
| Capacity | 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB: divide the price by the terabytes to compare value |
| Warranty | An Indian warranty from an authorised seller, the years of cover, and a GST invoice |
- Look for “PS5 compatible”: the listing should say so. Some drives are sold as officially licensed for PS5, such as the WD_BLACK SN850P and the Seagate Game Drive for PS5.
- Watch for “Imported”: imported drives may come without an Indian warranty.
- Heatsink height: a tall heatsink made for a PC may not fit under the PS5 cover; stay within 8.0 mm above the board.
We do not rank SSD brands, and we have not tested drives ourselves.
How to install it
These are Sony’s steps in short; its page has photos for each model.
Safety first: turn the PS5 off fully, unplug the power cord and every cable, and let it cool. Touch a metal object to discharge static, and never switch the console on with the cover off.
- Remove the cover: on the Slim and Pro (CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups), the triangle cover; on the original PS5 (CFI-1000), take off the base and slide off the side cover.
- Unscrew and remove the expansion slot cover.
- Remove the screw and spacer, and move the spacer to match your drive’s length.
- Push the drive into the connector at an angle, then tilt it down and fix it with the screw.
- Put the slot cover and the console cover back.
- Reconnect the cables, switch on, and follow the on-screen steps to format the drive.
Formatting erases everything on the drive, so do not stop it halfway.
SSD or external USB drive?
Buy an M.2 SSD to play PS5 games; a USB drive can only store them.
| M.2 SSD | External USB drive | |
|---|---|---|
| Play PS5 games | Yes | No, copy them back first |
| Play PS4 games | Yes | Yes |
| Size | 250 GB to 8 TB | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Needs | Fitting inside the console | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster; one drive in use at a time |
A USB drive is a cheap place to keep PS4 games and park PS5 games you will play again; copying back is often quicker than downloading. Sony’s USB storage page has the details.

Which SSD works with the PS5?
An M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4, 250 GB to 8 TB, with cooling such as a heatsink. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s read speed or faster.
Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?
Yes, Sony says effective cooling is required. Buy a drive with a heatsink, or add one that fits within 11.25 mm total thickness.
Can I use a PCIe Gen3 SSD in a PS5?
